Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), could face a possible ethics probe in the House of Representatives after an independent ethics watchdog asked Congress’s independent ethics office to start one. A nonprofit ethics watchdog, Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust, had written a letter Tuesday to ask Congress to use their independent ethics office to launch an ethics probe into Maloney’s filings. The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust Executive Director, Kendra Arnold, wrote a letter to the House of Representatives Office of Congressional Ethics on Tuesday, citing Business Insider as their evidence. In the letter , Arnold requested the Office of Congressional Ethics immediately look into the Congressman for violating House ethics rules. It has been hard to pin the White House down, ideologically speaking. Is he maintaining the cautious center-left approach that he has followed most of his career? Or is he pursuing a paradigmatic shift in American politics in the manner of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society or President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal? Mellman: McConnell blasts big business stands

S enate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Addison (Mitch) Mitchell McConnell McConnell seeks to end feud with Trump Senate GOP signal they won't filibuster debate of hate crimes bill Colin Powell on Afghanistan: 'We've done all we can do' MORE ’s (R-Ky.) diatribe against big business could spawn volumes of analysis. The text tells many tales: the frayed coalition between the board room and the pick-up truck, hypocrisy, and more. What struck me most was the fundamental inaccuracy of nearly every assertion and premise on which McConnell built his remarks. Start with the simplest: that voting rights is “a highly controversial issue.” It’s not. Most everyone, except Republican officeholders, believes that barriers to citizens voting ought to be dismantled, not erected anew. ADVERTISEMENT Polls show Americans support voting rights legislation by over 50 points, with Republicans favoring it by 35 points and more. Specific elements of the voting … [Read more...] about Mellman: McConnell blasts big business stands

In Wake of Several Mass Murders, Americans Once Again Debate Gun Ownership

NEW ORLEANS - In the wake of last month's deadly shootings in Colorado and Georgia, President Joe Biden recently announced six executive orders his administration believes will lead to some reduction in gun violence. The United States is unique among developed nations in the high number of gun-related deaths in the country. While nearly all Americans understand there's a problem, there are widely differing views on what's causing the epidemic of deaths, and how to solve it. Those contrasting opinions are on full display when discussing the March 22 mass shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado that left 10 innocent people dead. "Easy access to guns played a critical role in that shooting," explained Patrick Armstrong, whose father taught gun control law. Armstrong lives in New Orleans, Louisiana, which had the fourth-highest murder rate among large American cities in 2019. Armstrong said it's discouraging how easy it was for the suspect in Boulder to purchase the … [Read more...] about In Wake of Several Mass Murders, Americans Once Again Debate Gun Ownership
