Hamilton held on to take his 99th career pole despite not improving on his final flying lap, with his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas qualifying down in eighth, on spot ahead of Lando Norris, who lost a time that would have put him third due to a track limits violation. Both Mercedes cars and Verstappen will start the race on the advantageous medium tyres after successfully getting through on the yellow-walled rubber, which offers significantly better durability compared to the softs. Hamilton led the way after the first runs in Q3 with a 1m14.411s, but could not recover time lost in the first sector on his second effort. This meant he did not improve the pole benchmark, despite setting the fastest time in the final sector, but as his rivals did not improve by enough he held on to claim his first pole of the 2021 season. Perez outqualified Verstappen in his second event for Red Bull, ending up just under 0.1s adrift of Hamilton's fastest time. Hamilton takes pole for Emilia-Romagna GP ahead of Red Bulls, Canada’s Stroll 10th
IMOLA, Italy - World champion Lewis Hamilton edged out the Red Bull duo to claim pole position for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix on Saturday. It was Hamilton’s 99th career pole and although there is a Red Bull directly behind the Mercedes driver, it will be Sergio Perez rather than Max Verstappen. Montreal’s Lance Stroll will start 10th, while Toronto’s Nicholas Latifi is in the 14th spot. Saturday’s practice was briefly red-flagged after Latifi lost control at the Villeneuve chicane and slid through the gravel and into the barriers. A brilliant first lap in the final segment of qualifying saw Hamilton edge Perez by .035 seconds. The British driver was .087 faster than Verstappen, who is expected to be his main challenger this season. “I didn’t expect to be ahead of two Red Bulls, they’ve been so quick this weekend,” Hamilton said. “The car is feeling much better, I want to thank the team for their hard work. “I love the challenge, having two Red Bulls will definitely make … [Read more...] about Hamilton takes pole for Emilia-Romagna GP ahead of Red Bulls, Canada’s Stroll 10th
Lewis Hamilton ‘surprised’ to beat Red Bulls to Emilia-Romagna GP pole as he continues to ‘love’ new fight
Lewis Hamilton insisted he was genuinely "shocked" to have overcome the Red Bulls for his first pole position of the 2021 season at the Emilia-Romagna GP - and admitted F1's fierce new inter-team fight was "challenging me in a different way". The seven-time world champion celebrated his 99th F1 pole at Imola on Saturday but said he had not been expecting to top qualifying, particularly after final practice earlier on Saturday when Max Verstappen outpaced him by six tenths of a second. "For us it's a real surprise," said Hamilton to Sky Sports F1 . "You heard it on the radio for us. We do have a small deficit in performance, we felt at least. We saw it in the last race, we've seen it through the weekend. Pacific GP Friday Qualifying Notes and Times
Situated close to the beautiful city of Budapest, the Hungaroring is another relatively tight, twisty circuit possessing few obvious overtaking opportunities. Cars hit maximum speeds of around 275 km/h at the end of the pit straight before braking for a sweeping, right-hand corner. Predictably, such a layout makes the Hungaroring a high downforce circuit - in fact the levels of downforce required exceed those for Monaco. To be competitive, a car must have good front-end grip and be able to change direction quickly, consistently and without understeer. Two major concerns for race engineers are the track's bumpy nature and the likelihood that the surface will be quite dirty when the cars first start running. Past experience has shown that it usually takes some time before it cleans up and becomes "rubbered in". The Team
Lucky Strike B.A.R Honda left Hockenheim feeling more positive after the German Grand Prix. Sickening photos show how chemicals used to cut cocaine rot your skin and genitals
Shocking images have emerged showing how regular cocaine use can rot the skin and genitals. Sales of the Class A drug are expected to soar as lockdown restrictions are lifted and pubs re-open - but those who give in to temptation may want to think again. Around two thirds of the 'party drug' coming into the UK is laced with chemical levamisole, used to treat parasitic worm infections in cows and horses. Until 2000, levamisole was used to treat arthritis and bowel cancer before human consumption was banned due to severe side effects, including skin rotting. The medication is cheap in South America, with drug gangs increasingly using it to cut the product before shipment, when years ago it was sent in purer form. And because it acts as a stimulant, it's difficult for the average user to detect. Colombian doctors published details in BMJ Case Reports of 11 patients in their 30s who had taken the Class A drug mixed with levamisole, causing body parts to rot, as well as … [Read more...] about Sickening photos show how chemicals used to cut cocaine rot your skin and genitals
Tsunoda got “too excited” before Imola qualifying crash
Following his impressive showing on debut in Bahrain three weeks ago, Tsunoda arrived at Imola hopeful of challenging for a second haul of points and a maiden Q3 appearance. But the Japanese driver lost the rear of his AT02 car at the exit of the Variante Alta chicane, causing him to spin backwards into the wall. It left his car with significant damage and brought out a red flag, as well as resigning Tsunoda to last place on the grid for tomorrow's race without setting a time in qualifying. "I was just pushing too much at entry, to be honest," Tsunoda explained. "Until then the lap felt great, actually. I think that potentially it was easy to go through Q1 with one tyre. "I was just too excited. For me, that was a silly mistake, so I feel really sorry for the team. You have to reset today, and just drive the race tomorrow." Perez: Last-corner mistake cost me Imola F1 pole
Perez bounced back from a difficult Friday that saw him crash into Esteban Ocon in FP1 and struggle to feature with the frontrunners in FP2 by qualifying second at Imola. It marked Perez’s best-ever F1 qualifying result, beating his previous best starting position of third, as he fell just 0.035 seconds shy of pole-sitter Lewis Hamilton’s lap time. But Perez believed he did have the pace to snatch pole position away for Red Bull in the dying moments of qualifying after Hamilton failed to improve on his final lap. “I should have been on pole today," Perez said. “I did a mistake on my final corner, so I think it's everything positive. “We just have to make sure that we keep progressing, and tomorrow is what matters." Perez was satisfied with how he managed to recover from the incident on Friday with Ocon, and admitted he was surprised by the turnaround over the weekend. “I have to say well done to the team," Perez said. “Yesterday I made a mistake and I made … [Read more...] about Perez: Last-corner mistake cost me Imola F1 pole
Hamilton never expected to beat Red Bulls in Imola qualifying
With Red Bull having had the pace advantage in Bahrain, and topping final free practice at Imola, Hamilton was bracing himself for losing out to either Max Verstappen or Sergio Perez. However, a great performance from the world champion, allied to mistakes from both Red Bull drivers on their final Q3 laps, meant Hamilton took the top spot on Saturday. Hamilton ended up just 0.035 seconds ahead of Perez, and 0.087 seconds clear of Verstappen. Speaking after the session, Hamilton said that there were times this weekend where Mercedes felt that Red Bull had an advantage that was more than half a second per lap. "I definitely didn't expect us to be ahead of two Red Bulls," said Hamilton. "They have been so quick this weekend. There were times where they were six tenths ahead, and we didn't really know where we would be. "But the car was already feeling a lot better from the beginning this weekend. So I have a huge amount of respect to the team for the hard work to really … [Read more...] about Hamilton never expected to beat Red Bulls in Imola qualifying
Marquez ‘doesn’t understand’ Portimao MotoGP practice speed
Marquez made his long-awaited comeback on Friday at the Algarve International Circuit, having sat out the 2020 season after breaking his right arm badly in the season-opening Spanish GP at Jerez. Third-fastest on a drying track in FP1, Marquez bagged himself a provisional Q2 place after ending FP2 sixth quickest with a lap just 0.473s off pacesetter Francesco Bagnaia's Ducati. Marquez explained that his arm felt "tired" in FP2, but while his physical condition remains a question mark going forward, he says he went "better than expected". "It was a great day, a great feeling and honestly speaking I go out on the first run – the track was not so good, but immediately I felt good on the bike," he said. "In the morning, in terms of feeling I felt better than in the afternoon because I was fresh. The arm was fresh and I had power. "Then already in the afternoon I struggled a little bit more to warm up the arm and I start to feel the arm was a little bit more tired. Apart … [Read more...] about Marquez ‘doesn’t understand’ Portimao MotoGP practice speed
