Flash floods across Singapore on Saturday after heavy rain

Heavy rain on Saturday (April 17) afternoon caused flash floods across Singapore, with a number of pavements flooded in the western and central areas. These included those in Dunearn Road near Sime Darby Centre, and the park connector along Ulu Pandan Canal due to the high water levels in adjacent drains and canals. Netizens took to social media to post videos and photos of flooded roads and canals in Queenstown, Bukit Timah and Ulu Pandan. At around 4.45pm on Saturday, national water agency PUB updated in a Facebook post that traffic remained passable in these areas. PUB had deployed its quick response teams to affected locations to help drivers and pedestrians, it said. The prolonged heavy rain had caused water levels in several drains and canals to exceed 90 per cent capacity. Since noon, PUB had been issuing flood risk warnings for over 20 locations, including Sime Darby Centre, Bukit Timah Canal (Leng Kwang Baptist Church), Ulu Pandan Canal and Sungei Pandan Kechil … [Read more...] about Flash floods across Singapore on Saturday after heavy rain

Philippines warns of floods and landslides as Surigae becomes a super typhoon, major alerts raised

The typhoon, locally known as Bising, which now has the strength of a Category 5 hurricane, is over the Philippine Sea to the east of the Bicol region, the nation’s weather bureau said Sunday. Flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur, the weather agency warned as it placed about a dozen areas east of the country under the lowest storm alert. While the storm isn’t expected to hit land, it will bring heavy rains and strong winds to eastern provinces as it moves northwest with top winds of 215 kilometres (134 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 265 kilometres an hour. The US Joint Typhoon Warning Centre has labelled Surigae as a super typhoon, with maximum sustained winds of 165 knots and gusts of up to 200 knots. "Considering the uncertainty in the track forecast of the typhoon, a westward shift in the current forecast track may result in potentially significant impacts,” the Philippine weather bureau said. The three Rs: More than elementary for south Louisiana

The rain has stopped! Thank the Lord! For now, it’s time to talk about the three Rs, and, no, this is not a refresher course in elementary education. Rain. Runoff. Red. As in red snapper. Let’s take first things first, rain and runoff. Just when you think we’ve had enough tragedy in the latest five-year run of floods, hurricanes, torrential rain, tornadoes and hail — and a pandemic thrown into the mix — families are facing the loss of loved ones from the eruption of the storm off our coast last week that sank the Seacor Power lift boat. It all the more points to staying safe amidst this latest blow. Don’t do anything foolish. Flood waters will continue to be a problem for the next several days. False River is closed to outboard motor traffic. You can use electric trolling motors from the launches, but don’t crank the big engine. Water is over the bulkheads in most places, and runoff on both ends of this oxbow lake will drive water levels higher. CCA Louisiana postponed … [Read more...] about The three Rs: More than elementary for south Louisiana

Wastewater washed into Saigon canal by rains kills fish en masse

After a sudden downpour on April 4, Nguyen Tien Dung, 40, and his colleagues at the state-owned Ho Chi Minh City Urban Environment Co., Ltd (Citenco) had to spend two hectic days removing dead fish from the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, which flows through Districts 1, 3, Binh Thanh, Phu Nhuan, and Tan Binh. They collected 14 tons of fish from a three-kilometer section of the 8.5-km (5.28 miles) canal, making it one of the most serious such incidents in almost a decade since Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe was cleaned. Dung and 20 others had rushed to the scene at 3:30 in the morning after being informed that dead fish were floating all over the canal. He said: "Even the previous evening I had noticed a lot of dead fish in the water and its change of color. Though I’d come prepared, I was still shocked to see so many fish belly up all over the canal." Since 2012, after taking over the job of cleaning the canal, he has been taking out dead fish almost every year soon after the rains arrive, but … [Read more...] about Wastewater washed into Saigon canal by rains kills fish en masse

Facets of Faith: The past 20 years have brought lots of heartache; my brother’s death crushed me

I have been writing this column for more than two decades. In that time, we have been through Katrina, Rita, Gustav and other hurricanes; a major flood; a pandemic and more. On a personal level, I lost both my parents. On March 17 came the loss that crushes me: my “baby” brother Thomas Pitchford, 52, died from cancer. He lived in Wales. Thomas, a librarian, was among the elite of researchers. For example, his research led him to discover an unintentional internet hoax: a poem widely attributed to William Blake, often included on school reading lists, is actually by an American poet and was published in an anthology with Blake’s name in the title. The find led to the BBC doing an interview with him about it, bbc.com/news/education-22971225 . Thomas started his librarian job as a student at Louisiana College. He eventually worked in the Rapides Parish Library. He and his wife, Heather Tisdale, moved to the United Kingdom. He taught in Ramsgate, England, for a term and then … [Read more...] about Facets of Faith: The past 20 years have brought lots of heartache; my brother’s death crushed me
