Thousands of chippies and kebab shops could shut if online junk food ads are banned, ministers warned

THOUSANDS of Britain's much-loved chippies and kebab shops could go under if the Government presses ahead with plans for an online ban on junk adverts, ministers have been warned. Groups representing tens of thousands of popular takeaways have joined forces to beg ministers not to ban them from advertising online as they prepare to take a decision in the coming weeks. Takeaways are pleading for an exemption for smaller firms with five or fewer branches so they don't get whacked with the ban alongside huge chains - who they say can afford to advertise elsewhere. Ibrahim Dogus, Chair of the British Takeaway Campaign, said last night: "This ban could put lots of restaurants out of business , which would put thousands of jobs at risk. "It’s anti-business and will only hurt the little guys. "The small takeaway down the road doesn’t have the budget to spend on showy campaigns, late night TV adverts or posters. Social media is their shop window, so without it, their … [Read more...] about Thousands of chippies and kebab shops could shut if online junk food ads are banned, ministers warned

Paul George scores 33, Clippers snap Suns win streak in chippy game

LOS ANGELES — Paul George scored 33 points, Kawhi Leonard added 27 and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Phoenix Suns 113-103 on Thursday night in a matchup of two of the top teams in the Western Conference. George was 7 of 9 from 3-point range in 30 minutes in his eighth 30-point game of the season. His season high of 39 points was against Phoenix on Jan. 3. The Clippers made 18 3-pointers, which is the 12th time this season they have made 18 or more in a game. Leonard scored 19 points in the second half to help the Clippers end of the Suns’ winning streak at seven. Los Angeles trailed 67-61 with eight minutes remaining in the third quarter before coming back with an 8-2 run to tie it. LA led 83-81 at the end of the third quarter before opening the fourth with a 10-2 run to seize control. Its largest lead was 16 points late in the fourth. Rajon Rondo , who was acquired from Atlanta near the deadline, added 15 points for the Clippers, who are 5-2 during a season-long, … [Read more...] about Paul George scores 33, Clippers snap Suns win streak in chippy game

John Fulkerson ‘doesn’t remember’ getting injured vs. Florida

Shortly before Tennessee’s NCAA Tournament game against Oregon State on Friday, the team announced that senior John Fulkerson would be out due to a concussion and facial fracture he suffered after taking an elbow to the face against Florida. Now, Fulkerson doesn’t even remember his injury — or the game in which he suffered it. Right before tip-off between the Volunteers and the Beavers, TNT sideline reporter Lauren Shehadi gave an update on Fulkerson, who was still sporting a black eye on the Tennessee bench. Shehadi spoke with Vols head coach Rick Barnes , who revealed to her that Fulkerson has no memory of getting hit in the head by Omar Payne or being on the floor against the Gators in Nashville. “After that elbow in the face, Coach [Barnes] told me he doesn’t even remember the incident,” Shehadi said. “He doesn’t even remember the incident. He doesn’t remember being on the court that day. He did have facial surgery five days ago, and he’s here cheering on his team … [Read more...] about John Fulkerson ‘doesn’t remember’ getting injured vs. Florida

A storm brewing: Rangers rally to force Game 7 with Lightning (Video)

For the second straight series in these playoffs, the New York Rangers have forced a Game 7 after facing elimination. This time, it will be against the Tampa Bay Lightning, with the winner advancing to the Stanley Cup Final. It didn’t seem like much of a surprise that the Rangers had held on to take a 2-1 lead into the third period. They’ve been in similar situations like that before. But, needing the win, they erupted for five goals, chasing Ben Bishop from the net, in the third period to defeat the Lightning 7-3 in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final. Derick Brassard recorded the hat trick for New York, capping off a five-point night that started with the opening goal less than four minutes in. Brassard is 1st @NYRangers player w/ 5 points in a game (regular season/playoffs) since March 6, 2011 (R. Callahan: 4-1—5 vs PHI). #NYRvsTBL — NHL Public Relations (@PR_NHL) May 27, 2015 “Honestly I just go out there and I try to just make a difference,” … [Read more...] about A storm brewing: Rangers rally to force Game 7 with Lightning (Video)

Dua Lipa left shaken after being charged at by fans in Mexico City

THE glamour of the Grammy Awards was a world away for Dua Lipa at the weekend, when she was charged at by excited fans. The British superstar jetted to Mexico City for work but looked shaken after locals tried to grab her. In footage on social media, the Don’t Start Now singer passed crowds of fans taking photos. But they rushed at her when she was just metres from her car, forcing security to tear them away as she hurried to get into the vehicle. It is believed Dua was left unscathed by the incident late on Saturday night. A source said: “News that she was in the area spread and obviously people were keen to catch sight of Dua. “But it turned nasty when two fans rushed up to her. They really ran at her and it looked scary. “Dua looked really uncomfortable. Thankfully security was there to drag the people away because who knows what could have happened.” Earlier the star shared a photo on Instagram, suggesting she was in Mexico shooting an Yves Saint Laurent … [Read more...] about Dua Lipa left shaken after being charged at by fans in Mexico City

Chiefs lose composure and see red amid a sea of yellow

Offsides. Unnecessary roughness. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Pass interference. And holding. Lots of holding. All those penalties were too much even for Patrick Mahomes to overcome: Good as Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were Sunday (Monday in Manila) — worthy champions, certainly — the Kansas City Chiefs put on a textbook display of how not to perform in a Super Bowl. By halftime, the defending champs had amassed more penalties (8) than points (6) — and more frustration than hope. It was an undisciplined, uncharacteristic and somewhat unbelievable loss of composure that set the stage for a 31-9 drubbing at the hands of the Bucs that very few saw coming. Kansas City’s 95 penalty yards in the first half were the most by any team in the first half of any of the 269 regular-season and playoff games this season. They were one more yard than Kansas City had racked up in any single game all year. The Chiefs only committed three penalties in the second half to finish the game with … [Read more...] about Chiefs lose composure and see red amid a sea of yellow

Chip shop customers queueing around the street for 1,000-calorie deep fried butty

CUSTOMERS have been battering down the door at a chippy for a deep fried butty. With queues around the block for the chip bap , staff had to shut early after running out at the weekend. The 1,000-calorie bread roll is filled with chips and a choice of gravy, mushy peas or curry sauce before being deep-fried. For £2.80, hungry customers also get another portion of chips on the side. Laura Frere, manager at KP’s Fish Bar in Leeds , reckoned: “It has gone mental. “We had to close on Sunday because we ran out of food. “And we had to ring our supplier for an emergency delivery after going through 25 bags of potatoes. Harden, Griffin Help Nets Hold Off Pistons

DETROIT (AP) — Blake Griffin seemed to be in the middle of everything in his return to Detroit. Griffin scored 17 points and was part of a first-half dustup that resulted in Isaiah Stewart’s ejection, and the Brooklyn Nets outlasted the Pistons 113-111 on Friday night. James Harden had 44 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists in a disjointed game that was full of free throws, technical fouls and other contentiousness. READ MORE: Capitals Shut Out Devils “They’re a hard-playing team,” Griffin said. “I don’t know if you expect to get elbowed, but I knew it was going to be chippy. They’re going to play hard.” Griffin spent three-plus years with the Pistons, but he reached a buyout agreement with Detroit earlier this month and went to the contending Nets. The Pistons played a tribute video for him during a first-half timeout, and he stood to acknowledge the small number of fans in attendance. By the end of the game, however, Detroit coach Dwane Casey didn’t want to talk … [Read more...] about Harden, Griffin Help Nets Hold Off Pistons

Avalanche rookie Bo Byram in concussion protocol as tensions mount with Golden Knights

Tensions between the Avalanche and its top West Division rival have become heated. Two days after Colorado pounded the Vegas Golden Knights 5-1 at Ball Arena, Saturday’s chippy finale of the two-game set featured an early fight between Avs defenseman Dan Renouf and Knights winger Keegan Kolesar. The Knights ultimately won 3-2 in overtime. Kolesar on Thursday delivered a questionable but unpenalized hit on Avs rookie defenseman Bo Byram, and the 19-year-old was scratched Saturday with an apparent head injury. “Renouf gets in a battle and took exception of the hit the other night on Bo and he fights right away,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said after Saturday’s game. Renouf, a journeyman playing in just his 12th game of the season, was replacing Byram. When Renouf isn’t in the lineup, the Avs certainly aren’t as physically imposing as Vegas. Colorado has traded size and toughness for skill and speed this season — partly because of injuries. The Avs traded shutdown defensemen … [Read more...] about Avalanche rookie Bo Byram in concussion protocol as tensions mount with Golden Knights

Kiszla: Are Artsy Avs too soft to win Stanley Cup? The Dark Knights are itching to find out.

Is the Avalanche too soft to win the Stanley Cup? Them’s fightin’ words. Yes, they are. No professional athlete, particulary one that laces up his skates and plays a sport as relentlessly physical as hockey, takes kindly to any suggestion he isn’t tough enough to be a champion. But just as there’s no getting around Vegas forward Ryan Reaves without a fight, there’s no denying the in-your-grill challenge punctuated with every heavy forecheck during Colorado’s 3-2 overtime loss to the meanest team in the West. “We were not physical enough,” Avalanche winger Joonas Donskoi said Saturday. In Las Vegas, the Knights are golden, beloved by fans. But this big and physical team brings a Darth Vader vibe everywhere else it travels in the league. And these Dark Knights are itching to find out: Is Colorado too soft to win the Cup? “They bang bodies pretty good,” said Colorado coach Jared Bednar, quick to note he respects Vegas as much for deft stick-handling as bruising hip checks. … [Read more...] about Kiszla: Are Artsy Avs too soft to win Stanley Cup?
