JERUSALEM: Israel took another step towards post-pandemic normalcy on Sunday (Mar 7), opening restaurants, bars and cafes to vaccinated "green pass" holders, with about 40 per cent of the population fully inoculated against the coronavirus. "We are coming back to life," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared, as he cut into a pastry at a Jerusalem cafe, in a video posted on Facebook. Israel, which launched its vaccination campaign in December, has given the recommended two jabs of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to more than 3.7 million of its roughly 9 million people. Nearly 5 million have received one shot. Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy: Inside Dartmouth’s Hazing Abuses
Long before Andrew Lohse became a pariah at Dartmouth College , he was just another scarily accomplished teenager with lofty ambitions. Five feet 10 with large blue eyes and the kind of sweet-faced demeanor that always earned him a pass, he grew up in the not-quite-rural, not-quite-suburban, decidedly middle-class town of Branchburg, New Jersey, and attended a public school where he made mostly A’s, scored 2190 on his SATs and compiled an exhaustive list of extracurricular activities that included varsity lacrosse, model U.N. (he was president), National Honor Society, band, orchestra, Spanish club, debate and – on weekends – a special pre-college program at the Manhattan School of Music, where he received a degree in jazz bass. He also wrote songs; gigged semiprofessionally at restaurants throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut; played drums for a rock band; chased, and conquered, numerous girls; and by his high school graduation, in 2008, had reached the pinnacle of … [Read more...] about Confessions of an Ivy League Frat Boy: Inside Dartmouth’s Hazing Abuses

20th Century The Call of the Wild is now screening. Monday Hint Of Love Three, 1pm Starring Debs Howard, Dennis Andres. A culinary literary agent clashes with a new client as they work together on a cookbook. Not reviewed. Capital In The 21st Century Māori TV, 8.30pm A disparity between the super-rich and the rest of us is behind left-wing French economist Thomas Piketty’s best-selling book Capital In The 21st Century in which he proposes wealth taxes. Here, New Zealand documentary maker Justin Pemberton, who made the Richie McCaw biopic Chasing Great , spices up Piketty’s 700-page tome with snazzy graphics, contemporary music and clips of men in suits. If 700 pages and a two-hour documentary both seem too much like hard work, Piketty’s argument is simple: the return on capital is greater than economic growth, increasing inequality. Many economists disagree, though. ★★★ Love Sarah Sky Premiere, 8.30pm Starring Celia Imrie, Shannon … [Read more...] about TV Guide movie reviews: Monday April 19 to Friday April 23

Barista frothing at ‘raw deal’ served up by council
Debbie Hamel says she was buzzing at the prospect of adding coffee to the menu of her smoothie cart in Sundial Square at Richmond, near Nelson, and moving her business to a prime site in the piazza. “I was so motivated,” Hamel said. “I went to do a [barista] course. I made inquiries about getting a coffee machine.” However, instead of flat whites and short blacks, the director of Debz Smoothies Ltd ended up brewing a case and taking Tasman District Council to the Disputes Tribunal. The council recently paid her more than $5600 in compensation for a lost opportunity to make those espressos from a new location in the square. The matter started in late 2019 when Hamel made an agreement with the council to add coffee and shift her cart from its spot on the square’s southeast corner to a site adjacent to Queen St. A coffee cart had been operating for many years in that prime location but was going to be moved, so the spot was to become vacant. Pushing wheelbarrows, a clutch of workers ferry sand, dismembered concrete or gravel, and others dig or hammer away, bent double or down on one knee.
