Parts of the country could see two months' worth of average rainfall in just two-and-a-half days as Storm Christoph batters Britain and the army remains on standby. As of 1.45pm, the environment agency has issued 62 flood warnings and 184 flood alerts today in England - see full list below. There are 52 flood alerts and 23 flood warnings in Wales, and 2 flood alerts in Scotland. Weather warnings for heavy rain are in force across the country, and the unsettled conditions could also bring significant flooding, high winds and snowfall as the storm engulfs the country through the middle of the week. Storm Christoph is set to bring 48 hours of flooding hell with more than a month's rainfall likely to fall in just a few days. People are being urged to prepare as an amber weather warning for rain was issued by the Met Office for Tuesday to Thursday for central northern England, affecting an area around Manchester, Leeds and Sheffield and stretching down to Peterborough. A major incident has been declared in South Yorkshire where sandbags are being handed out in flood-risk areas. Separate Met Office yellow warnings for rain have been issued for Northern Ireland, Wales, southern Scotland and the rest of England for the next two days. The Met Office warned homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings and fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life. Storm Christoph has sparked a total of 132 flood alerts and warnings as heavy rain batters Britain. This morning the Environment Agency has issued 15 flood warnings where flooding is expected and immediate action is required (see full list below). A total of 117 flood alerts have also been issued, where flooding is possible and people should be prepared as a major incident is declared in South Yorkshire. The Environment Agency described the combination of torrential rain and melting snow as a "volatile situation", as councils prepare for possible evacuations should a severe flood warning be issued. Catherine Wright, acting executive director for flood and coastal risk management at the Environment Agency, said: "That rain is falling on very wet ground and so we are very concerned that it's a very volatile situation and we are expecting significant flooding to occur on the back of that weather."
