Vietnam to strengthen child abuse prevention in light of recent sexual assaults

Vietnam's National Committee for Children has called on provincial and central-level city authorities to step up their measures to prevent children from drowning and abuse in an urgent notice sent this week. Recent reports of child drowning have emerged recently in Khanh Hoa, Phu Tho, and other provinces, as per the notice issued on Tuesday. Child sexual abuse is also on the rise, with victims as young as two years old having been recorded in recent weeks. In light of the issues, Nguyen Thi Ha, Deputy Minister of Labor, War Invalids, and Social Affairs and standing member of the National Committee for Children, endorsed the urgent notice to call for prompt actions in child protection from local authorities. Relevant agencies and assigned authorities are asked to continue upholding a government decree on the implementation of child abuse prevention law in Vietnam, as well as a government directive introduced in May 2020 on child rights and child protection. Donald Trump Backs ‘Getting Along’ with Russia as Ukraine Standoff Continues

Former President Donald Trump stressed the importance of the U.S. "getting along" with Russia and other world powers as tensions at the Ukraine border continued to mount amid a buildup of Russian troops. Speaking to Fox News on Monday night, Trump claimed "getting along with Russia is a good thing" and said he got along with the Russian President Vladimir Putin during his time in the Oval Office. The former commander-in-chief also said it would be a good thing for the U.S. to get along with China and North Korea, as he criticized his predecessor former President Barack Obama 's record. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity , Trump said: "Getting along with Russia is a good thing, not a bad thing. Getting along with China's a good thing. The problem we have with China was COVID, because nobody ever took out so much money from China." He later added: "I got along with President Putin. I liked him, he liked me. That's a good thing, not a bad thing." Newsweek … [Read more...] about Donald Trump Backs ‘Getting Along’ with Russia as Ukraine Standoff Continues

Creamerie: TVNZ’s post-apocalyptic, anti-Handmaid’s Tale offers up dark delights

Three dairy farmers accidentally run over the last surviving male human in local dark comedy Creamerie. REVIEW: All it took was 30 days. Just a month to wipe one-half of the population off the Earth. Eight years on and the remaining residents of Hiro Valley are living in seemingly perfect harmony. Sure there might not be any men anymore, but judicious use of the pre-virus sperm bank supplies is ensuring repopulation is possible (although only girls have a chance of a live birth). Like everything else, that’s run by Wellness and its charismatic leader Lane (Tandi Wright). Being bloke-free has enabled them to provide free education and healthcare for all, as well as mandatory menstruation leave. That’s the seemingly utopian backdrop to TVNZ’s new acerbic, sci-fi-infused black comedy Creamerie (streaming now on TVNZ OnDemand, as well as screening on Monday nights on TVNZ2). US ‘Aggressively’ Communicating With Houthis Via Back Channels – US Envoy

During a briefing at the State Department on Tuesday, US Special Envoy to Yemen Tim Lenderking told reporters that Washington does have means of getting messages to the Houthis, which are backed by Iran. “We do have ways of getting messages to the Houthis and we are using those channels very aggressively,” Lenderking revealed, Al Arabiyah reported. “Ending this war through a lasting political solution is the only solution … to end the humanitarian crisis that is devastating,” he added, also noting that the Houthis must halt its attacks on Saudi Arabia. The civil war intensified when a Saudi-led, US-backed coalition launched massive airstrikes against the Houthi political opposition faction in 2015. However, Lenderking has refused to directly provide answers on what other options the US could pursue if the Houthis continue their attacks. Also on Tuesday, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price urged the Houthis to end its current offensive in Yemen's Marib, halt all … [Read more...] about US ‘Aggressively’ Communicating With Houthis Via Back Channels – US Envoy

The Memo: Chauvin verdict delivers rare moment of justice

It was clear to any fair-minded person that Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd on a Minneapolis street last May. For once, a jury agreed. Their verdict, a landmark decision, could see Chauvin imprisoned for up to 40 years. ADVERTISEMENT Chauvin, a police officer at the time of his crimes, was found guilty on all three charges — second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The jury had deliberated for about 11 hours in all. Their decision is not a panacea, as many people from grassroots activists to former President Obama emphasized. There is abundant evidence of inequities that riddle the justice system. They will not be erased by the verdict. Individual states, as well as the federal government, are grappling with how to address those problems — and are doing so in the face of opposition from police unions, as well as some conservative voters and politicians. But the Chauvin verdict showed, at least, that justice can be done in some … [Read more...] about The Memo: Chauvin verdict delivers rare moment of justice

St. Louis lawyer who pointed gun at Black Lives Matter protesters considering Senate run

Mark McCloskey , who rose to national prominence after he was seen pointing an assault rifle at Black Lives Matter protesters in St. Louis last year, is looking at a possible Senate run in Missouri. McCloskey, a wealthy personal-injury lawyer, said in an interview with Politico that a Senate run is a “consideration.” McCloskey and his wife, Patricia, garnered attention in 2020 after they were seen waving guns at protesters outside their St. Louis mansion. While the two were indicted on charges of unlawful use of a weapon and evidence tampering, Republicans have raised them up as an example of what they say is a use of firearms in self-defense. ADVERTISEMENT In a sign of their prominence in GOP circles, the McCloskeys spoke at last year’s Republican National Convention and were even supported by then- President Trump Donald Trump St. Louis lawyer who pointed gun at Black Lives Matter protesters considering Senate run Chauvin found guilty as nation exhales … [Read more...] about St. Louis lawyer who pointed gun at Black Lives Matter protesters considering Senate run

Ethiopia’s Tigray Conflict Strips Children of Protection, Education, Nutrition, UNICEF Says

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND - The U.N. children’s fund warns the conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray province is stripping tens of thousands of children of their rights, plunging them into a protection crisis that is causing them unimaginable long-lasting harm. UNICEF spokesman James Elder has just returned from a visit to Ethiopia’s Tigray. He says his agency’s fears for the welfare of children expressed at the onset of the conflict nearly six months ago now are being realized. Elder said children are suffering from a protection crisis as the incidence of rape and gender-based violence grows. Since the start of the year, he said just one UNICEF supported center has been reporting an average of three cases of gender-based violence every day. Those are the reported cases, he says, adding the true number is certainly higher. “The personal stories I received from children who had been raped or testimonies of women who were victims of sexual violence were harrowing and quite cruel…Yes, I … [Read more...] about Ethiopia’s Tigray Conflict Strips Children of Protection, Education, Nutrition, UNICEF Says

TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Wildcats take a stand, why you should pay attention!

Selena Kuikahi We are roughly a month into the semester and three protests have already ensued on our University’s campus, and rightfully so. The most recent one near campus, being The Walkout for Climate Change, emphasized on-campus activism after following the protests regarding the homophobia and racism that had been resurfacing within the U’s community. Thankfully, the earlier of the two protests have been met with actual change: the firing of a homophobic faculty member, and a met call for accountability in the wake of another hate crime. Some would argue that the takeaway from these events should be an increase of tolerance within the community. But, others would say that a push for tolerance is the issue. The emphasis on tolerance is problematic because the definition within itself bears a lack of understanding. Although it is important to make space for what you may not understand yet , it is still your responsibility as a cog in the UA’s machine to try to understand its … [Read more...] about TOPIC OF THE WEEK: Wildcats take a stand, why you should pay attention!
