Japan on Tuesday approved plans to release 1.25 million tons of contaminated water from the destroyed Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean. “On the premise of strict compliance with regulatory standards that have been established, we select oceanic release,” the Japanese government said in a statement on April 13. Work to release the water will begin in about two years the government said Tuesday, adding that the entire process is expected to take decades to complete. Over 1 million tons of water used to cool the affected reactors was subsequently stored in above-ground tanks on the plant’s premises. The tanks also contain groundwater and rainwater contaminated by the nuclear meltdown. Plans to dispose of the water have been in development for years, with the Japanese government deciding … [Read more...] about Japan Approves Plan to Release Contaminated Fukushima Water into Ocean

The Energy Debates: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Editor's Note: "The Energy Debates" is a LiveScience series about the pros, cons, policy debates, myths and facts related to various alternative energy ideas. We invite you to join the debate by commenting directly on each article. The Facts Most of the planet is covered by the oceans, and they absorb a staggering amount of energy from the sun each day. Ocean thermal energy conversion, or OTEC, taps into this energy to produce electricity. Ocean thermal energy conversion relies on the fact that water near the surface is heated by sunlight while seawater deep in the dark is much colder. OTEC plants use warm surface water to heat ammonia or some other fluid that boils at a low temperature. The resulting gas is used to drive turbines that produce electricity. The gas is then cooled by cold water pumped up from the ocean depths and the resulting fluid is recycled to help generate power. As OTEC relies on temperature differences, it works best in the tropics, where the surface … [Read more...] about The Energy Debates: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion

Boris Johnson desperately needs a more coherent China strategy
London (CNN) Like many of its global counterparts, the United Kingdom is in desperate need of a China strategy. Many of the world's middling to large economies have benefited from inward Chinese investment since the global financial crisis of 2008. For over a decade, China's extraordinary wealth offered an obvious way out of recession when options for investment elsewhere were limited. Fast forward to 2021, and the decision to woo an authoritarian government with alleged ambitions to challenge the United States as the primary global superpower looks naïve. China has become a hot issue in British politics over the past 12 months, as lawmakers and activists have become aware of how much the UK relies on a country that stands against many of the things that it claims to uphold. And many in London are worried that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has neither the time nor imagination to adequately handle one of Britain's greatest foreign challenges. … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson desperately needs a more coherent China strategy

Residents complain dump infesting mosquitoes , burning leads to environmental hazards The 5,000-square-foot plot adjoining the Regent Plaza mall on the Baner-Balewedi Link Road reserved for a public amenity space is for the past two years being used to dump nonrecyclable waste which is burnt by unidentified people every few days. There is a volley of allegations between locals and Pune Municipal Corporation ( PMC ) with them blaming each other for the problem. The fact remains that the unattended garbage dumped here is leading to mosquito infestation which is a menace for inhabitants of the approximately 20 housing societies nearby. This is apart from the stench and hazardous fumes that emanate when the non-recyclable garbage is put to the fire every few days. Locals are up in arms over the resultant health hazard. Meanwhile, the civic body has promised a reso- lution over the next eight days.
