The best smart thermostats can automate the heating and cooling of your home, to ensure it's at the temperature you want when you want it. No more returning home late to find you’ve been wasting energy as the heating has been running full blast all evening. Smart thermostats also let you change the temperature with your voice, and can work with other smart home gadgets, such as smart lights and smart plugs and switches , so when you walk through the door the lights are on, your favorite songs are playing and your home is at the perfect temperature. E-scooter maker Okinawa Autotech investing Rs 70 cr in components unit at Raj plant

Okinawa Autotech is setting up a plant to manufacture motors and controls for its scooters at its upcoming 5-lakh units per annum plant at Alwar in Rajasthan which is scheduled for commissioning late next month or early June. Surprisingly, leading electric two-wheeler makers are on a massive expansion spree despite the abysmal volumes and low capacity utilization. For instance, Gurugram-based Okinawa that leads the EV scooters space, closely followed by Hero Electric from HeroMoto Corp, is adding almost six-times more capacity and so is the Hosur-based Ather Energy , in spite of the fact that they are using only one-third of their capacity now. Ampere and Ather come at distant third and fourth slot when it comes to volumes. The move makes Okinawa the first electric two-wheeler maker to have own assembly line for motors and controls, the two key components in an EV after the battery, which it is already manufacturing at its Bhiwadi plant, said Jeetender Sharma , founder … [Read more...] about E-scooter maker Okinawa Autotech investing Rs 70 cr in components unit at Raj plant

Salaries at these startups boomed among coronavirus

Mumbai: Increased demand for technology talent, following an accelerated focus on digital adoption by businesses due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is making hiring expensive, especially for early-stage startups , multiple founders and recruiters told ET. Engineers, data analysts , developers and product managers in the three-to-seven-year experience bracket are often being hired for up to 50% higher salaries than industry levels by startups flush with investor capital. Founders and investors say the current “hiring bubble” is reminiscent of 2014-2015 when the funding boom inflated salaries—the first time for the Indian startup ecosystem—on the back of massive funding that the likes of homegrown e-commerce company Flipkart received. At the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, companies had to retrench staff, but as the wheels of the economy picked up pace and the adoption of technology accelerated, funds flowed into startups in the fintech, Software as a Service (SaaS), edtech … [Read more...] about Salaries at these startups boomed among coronavirus

Why India needs a lot more talent that can craft chips

V Ramgopal Rao, director at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, is involved in two startups. One is trying to make an explosive detection kit on a chip. The other is building sensors for agricultural applications. Both these require VLSI (very large-scale integration) talent. VLSI is the process of creating an integrated circuit (IC) by combining millions of transistors onto a single chip. Different applications often require different kinds of chips. Off-the-shelf chips may not be good enough, or may be too expensive. Rao is trying to bring down the cost by creating unique chip designs. But VLSI talent is too expensive in India. “I cannot afford my own PhD students,” Rao said at the Times Techies Webinar last week. The students’ salary as soon as they graduate, Rao said, is almost half of his. “In five years they would be earning much more than what I would be making. So just imagine the condition of startups. They have a huge requirement of VLSI implementation and they … [Read more...] about Why India needs a lot more talent that can craft chips

What Is Hi-Fi Audio, and Should You Pay More for It?

Here’s a riddle: If higher-quality audio sounds better, and better-sounding music is more enjoyable, then shouldn’t you stream music in the highest possible audio quality? The answer is yes. Listen to music in the highest possible quality. You’ll love the shimmering drum cymbals that keep singing out long after they’ve been hit. Hearing fingers sliding on the neck of the guitar will bring a new dimension to the acoustic ballad that makes you tear up each time you hear it. Listening to the best-fidelity streams means you’ll feel like you’re in the room with the artists. The answer to the riddle is also no. Streaming songs at the highest possible audio quality costs most people too much money and effort to justify it. And therein lies the conundrum. There’s no initiation sequence or member’s card to become an audiophile. If you love hearing the finer details of a song, then dive in. Star Wars : Actors, Singers, Directors Try Their Luck in Political Ring of India’s West Bengal

India's federally ruling BJP and West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress have hedged their bets on star power to win the ongoing political battle in the state legislature. This time, state elections are witnessing a bitter political contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC). It is because the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC is aiming to retain power for a third consecutive term and the BJP wants to unseat it. Both parties are hoping to win voters' hearts. They wish to swing votes in their favour while relying heavily on the celebrity appeal of their candidates. Most of these celebrity candidates have been fielded in "tough" seats, known for being rival party bastions.
