The Russian military has developed highly trained ” spy dolphins ” and deployed them into the Black Sea to defend its naval base, satellite images have shown. Images released by the US Naval Institute show that dolphin pens were moved to the gates of a Crimean harbour in the lead-up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine . The dolphins, used by the Russian military in “counter diver” operations, were deployed at the gates of Sevastopol Harbour. The aquatic agents were trained at the Crimean State Oceanarium and reports indicate they can fight off invading divers, carry bombs and even plant mines for Russian military forces . Russia took control of spy dolphin unit after annexing Crimea in 2014, with Moscow claiming that the mammals had “defected” to Russia and had been conscripted into their military. The Soviet Union had began training military dolphins in Sevastopol nearly fifty years ago and since then the harbour has become home to the Russian Black Sea fleet. Numerous valuable warships, including Moskva, the flagship vessel which sank in the Black Sea, were housed at the Crimean harbour alongside the spy dolphins.
