China ignores new trade minister’s letter for a MONTH after he tried to ease trade tensions

Australia’s newly appointed trade minister has revealed his Chinese counterparts have not responded to his communications as the bitter relationship between the two countries continues to deteriorate. Dan Tehan, who assumed the role after a cabinet reshuffle in December, wrote a letter to Chinese commerce minister Wang Wentao in an attempt to sort out their grievances.   But after more than one month Mr Wentao has not bothered to reply. The authoritarian state has remained furious with Canberra since April, when Scott Morrison’s government called for an independent inquiry into the origin of the Covid-19 pandemic and the role some Communist Party officials played in covering up the initial outbreak. Beijing has since introduced a litany of unofficial bans and arbitrary tariffs targeting over $20billion worth of Australian exports as pay back for speaking out against China’s response to the crisis. Now the relationship has become so toxic, the authoritarian state’s top brass is refusing to speak with Australia’s political leaders.
