The Queen has been advised to plant bat-friendly flowers such as ivy and honeysuckle around a new adventure playground next to her home on the Royal Sandringham Estate. It was announced last month that her Majesty, 94, is planning a huge revamp of the play area at Sandringham, inspired by Kate Middleton’s Back to Nature garden last year, adding features modelled on landmarks around her Norfolk estate. The monarch has been told the site would benefit from a wildflower planting scheme to increase the foraging opportunities for bats and pollinators, and has been advised to install three bat boxes and two bird boxes on trees near the huge play area. The ecological appraisal for the playground stated that the National Policy Planning Framework (NPPF) requires Biodiversity Net Gain – leaving biodiversity in a better state than before – before approving enhancements to the estate.
