PATIALA: Despite efforts by the state government to curb stubble burning , 159 cases have been reported from September 23 to October 1. In the corresponding period last year, only 25 were cases reported. This year 55 cases of stubble burning was recorded on September 23. Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) officials claimed that 62 stubble burning cases were reported on September 24 while 31 cases and five cases were reported on September 26 and 27 respectively. On September 28, only six cases were recorded through remote sensing. In comparison, during the same period last year, no case of stubble burning was reported from September 23 to 28 and only two cases on September 29. Nine and 14 cases were reported on September 30 and October 1, respectively. PPCB officials said in 2018 there was an increase in fire incidents, which stood at 45,397, but there was a decline in the burnt area. âThe cases of paddy stubble burning witnessed a rise in 2018 but the burnt area declined by up to 9.95%.
