The city’s Health Commissioner on Monday ordered all yeshivas in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn to bar students without vaccinations following an outbreak of measles in Orthodox Jewish communities that led to 285 cases since October. “This outbreak is being fueled by a small group of anti-vaxxers in these neighborhoods, said Health Commissioner Oxiris Barbot. “They have been spreading dangerous misinformation based on fake science.” Under Barbot’s order, yeshivas continuing to ignore vaccination protocols would face fines and potential closure. The department says the 246 of the 285 cases are children and 39 are adults. Twenty-one people have been hospitalized – including five admitted to intensive care units — but there have been no deaths. Last month, the Health Department put the total at 158 cases. Officials attributed much of the recent surge to Yeshiva Kehilath Yakov in Williamsburg allowing unvaccinated kids back into school or daycare. They said the yeshiva is connected to more than 40 cases, nearly double the 21 cases reported there a month ago.
