I MADE a conscious decision a while ago to take a trip to a country I’ve always wanted to see. But, because of so many press stories about this immense expansive land, I had reservations. Now, in my twilight years, I threw caution to the wind and decided to go. Off I went on another adventure. I got to Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 and hit an obstacle. If you are someone who flies regularly, you will know airport authorities are trying to automate all departments going through to your flight. Basically cost-cutting exercises and job losses. This particular new system where you put your bags through check-in yourself, is not the best as yet. If your bag is overweight, it’s a pain to sort it out. Picture the scene,16 check-ins with one person helping with the problems. The queues were ridiculous and tempers frayed, not the best start. I was off to St Petersburg, in Russia, then taking the high- speed Sapsan train to Moscow. I was nervous and all I kept thinking about was the country’s human rights record, the FSB and their attitude towards gay people.
