The way Iona has buffed up its resume with victories already this season over Maryland, St. Joe’s and Richmond, not to mention its 5-0 start to the MAAC season, the Gaels have picked up many admirers along the way, particularly from the New York area basketball community. One such admirer will get his first look at Iona Thursday night when first-year Manhattan coach Steve Masiello brings his surprising Jaspers to the Hynes Center for the 78th meeting between these two prominent local programs. Iona leads the all-time series, 42-35. And though Masiello has had a taste of this long-time rivalry from his days as an assistant coach at Manhattan prior to his Louisville days, this one, he said, will be special. “It’s a very big rivalry for us and should be a tremendous game,” Masiello said after practice Wednesday. “I’m very excited going into it. And it’s a real hometown game for me. I went to Iona grammar school and a lot of my friends went to the Prep and the College.
