‘Some Girl(s)’

Neil LaBute films are definitely worthy of debate, though not always in the ways he intends. At his best (“In the Company of Men”), the arguments concern the subjects he raises. At his worst, they focus on whether the movie should have been made at all. In these latter instances — his script for the loathsome short “After-School Special” being the most recent example — LaBute is the M. Night Shyamalan of sexual warfare cinema. He builds towards preposterous finales that undermine his characters while sneering at his audience. There’s one of those in “Some Girl(s),” too, but his screenplay — directed by Daisy von Scherler Mayer — offers enough insight to offset the insult. Most crucial to the movie’s admittedly limited success is Adam Brody, who handles a near-impossible role with apparently casual ease. His character, who is just called Man, is a successful writer who’s decided to revisit several ex-girlfriends before he gets married.
